What is the difference between a BMW 3 and 5 series.

What is the difference between a BMW 3 and 5 series.

I'm looking specifically for info on maintenance required for each. Does series 5 BMW's require more maintenance than series 3?

All These Babies Require Maintenance!!!

Whatever the type... whatever the year..But not often as Honda's, Kias, VW, etc.

European Machines are built on Class, Luxury, Support, Speed, and Safety...#1 for sure!!!!

I am pretty sure prices, sport packages, style, engines, HP etc. Its different for each type of 3 series and each type of 5 series.

I preferrably LOVE the M5, 513ic, and 325i....BEAUTIFUL!!!

If you get them brand new from a dealer, your "maintenance" is less needed...but if you get them "used" but in good conditions, chances are that all this "maintenance" you are seemingly worried about, will happen pretty often....pretty much...depends.

Other than that enjoy this ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINES!!!

AND EXHILIRATE YOUR LIFE WITH TRUE POWER!

Well, the 5 litre engine burns more gas than the 3 litre for sure...but other than that..I guess there is no difference...the 6 and 7 series are more expensive to maintain because their engines are bigger and their overall mechanics are more complex.

The 5-series is somewhat bigger, is more luxerious aka. offers more options.

Because of exact all these differences: yes, generally they require more maintenance and have a lower mpg.

If you're looking for a cheap BMW:

You might want have a look at the 318iS. These are faster then the 318i, and even so have a better mpg. I advice to stay away from automatic ones, unless you have a great/relative cheap BMW scrapyard/breakers/garage in the neighbourhood which has many secondhand parts. If you go to BMW forums: generally, they all advice to stay away from automatics. That doesn't say all. If you take a test drive with an automatic: start with cold (in the morning) engine, and see if the automatic shifts RIGHT AWAY and without somewhat heavy shocks. If it doesn't, the gearbox is up for replacement (whatever the seller says or thinks).

Be suspicious if the shown mileage is relatively low; it wouldn't be the first BMW of which the mileage is illegally adapted (lowered).

Re: What is the difference between a BMW 3 and 5 series. replacing things like suspensio

replacing things like suspension will probably cost more on the 5 series. yes maintenance on any german car is a bitch, but the whole trick is DONT take it to the DEALER, thats where you get ripped off---moreso on the labor than the parts. Find a good local mechanic who specializes in german cars, and the small amount you pay more in maintenance is well worth it.

This a rather open question as you have not mentioned any years or what generation BMWs you are looking at.

In general, the difference between the 3 and 5 series is simply size. They have different powertrains as well (with some overlapping engines). So basically, reliability is the same for both models. For more specific reliability data, go to msnauto.com and checkout the reliability rankings. Hope that helps.

Both have many kinds of variations, BMW 3 is cheaper then 5 series, there are also great difference in their maintenance coast and features. You should see the car comparison between BMW 3 and 5 series, you can collect many information on the internet.

BMW 3 & BMW 5 has not much difference in their standard features. The major difference comes with price & mileage. BMW 3 is cheaper than BMW 5, where as the mileage of BMW 5 is good than 3 series. The fuel tank capacity of BMW 5 is also large than BMW 3 series. And if considering about maintenance then every car require the equal maintenance, the more you car the less the maintenance required.
